JJSBR is built on lived experience, heritage, and the unvarnished storytelling traditions of Delta blues and traditional American folk.

The spark traces back to a childhood spent listening to Johnny Cash records filling the air in my grandparents’ farmhouse. Those songs were stories told without disguise—not dressed up to merely entertain, but spoken because they carried weight, truth, and conviction. This grounded honesty defines how I approach my songs. 

Every track begins with the narrative. The words lead. The instrument answers. The deliberate pauses, the steady pulse, and the physical breath between lines are engineered not for commercial polish, but for human connection.

The Sonic Identity: The Duo Standard

I step away from the clutter of modern multi-tracking, synthetic pads, and commercial hooks. Every official JJSBR release is built upon an uncompromising, two-element foundation:

• The Voice: A single-source, unadorned spoken narrative delivered with clarity, weight, and pure human presence.

• The Instrument: A custom-engineered fingerstyle piccolo bass—voiced with wide spacing and open-tuned resonance—delivering the acoustic weight and warmth of a baritone instrument without unnecessary wall-of-sound production.

Space is not emptiness; space is an instrument. The silence between notes carries as much gravity as the words themselves.

Hardship to Signature Style

Years ago, my musical path began with a beat-up, hand-me-down classical guitar. I loved that instrument. The warm nylon strings carried the weathered spirit of the Outlaw Country records I spun endlessly, and I spent hours working out those tunes, chasing their grit and honesty. Over time, severe injuries and the toll of the years made standard fretboards impossible to play.

Refusing to walk away from music entirely, I picked up an old, beat-up Squier bass from the local pawn shop and replaced the heavy strings with a light piccolo set. It was a complete departure from everything I had spent years practicing, but the resulting tone had an unexpected presence—raw, rich, and unmistakably distinct.

What started as a physical workaround became the foundation of my sound. That deep, woody baritone character provides the unhurried sonic layer that lets the lyrical story take command.

My songs are built to carry the weight and gravity of the words, never to crowd the silence with unnecessary arrangement.
